Lawrence school board to consider approving teacher raises, handbook that bans cell phone usage
Lawrence teachers could receive raises and several staff members stipend increases this fall, based on the tentative contract up for the school board’s approval Monday. Lawrence Education Association, the district’s teachers union, came to an agreement with the district during a negotiations meeting on June 25. The tentative contract for 2024-25 increases the base annual salary by $1,400 for teachers.

Barton Co. currently unable to process motor vehicle transactions
At this time, the State of Kansas is not able to process any motor vehicle transactions. Included in the outage is the Barton County Treasurer’s Office. However, the Treasurer’s Office is open for business and can process other work, including tax payments. As a reminder, the Treasurer is now located in Suite 107, on the first floor, of the Courthouse.

Over 1 million acres have been burned by wildfires so far this year, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. There are currently 60 large fires active nationwide, with 10 new fires in the last few days. Just like the last several summers, widespread smoke from these wildfires is impacting parts of the Plains and Midwest. However, for now the smoke plume is just northwest of the Kansas City region.
