Power outages started stacking up as thunderstorms rolled through the Kansas City metro early Wednesday morning.

Around 1:30 a.m., about 7,000 outages started popping up, mostly north.

At 4 a.m., 36,000 Evergy customers were without power.

By 5:30 a.m., Evergy reported 619 outages impacting 33,050 customers.

Evergy posted a statement on its website explaining a line of 50-60 mph wind gusts and heavy lightning contributed to the outages. At its peak, 41,000 customers lost power.

The utility said 50% of outages were restored by 7 a.m.

"Due to the large amount of impacted areas across our territory, we aren’t able to provide specific restoration estimates," Evergy's note stated. "All local crews as well as additional contractor crews have been called in to assist with assessment and restoration efforts."

As crews continue to assess the damage and begin repairs, Evergy's outage map reported just under 14,000 customers without power at 9:04 a.m.

The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities reported 13 outages affecting 166 customers, and Independence Power and Light reported only eight outages impacting 2,044 customers.
