KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Outdoor seating became a popular addition to restaurants during the pandemic.

Kansas City leaders continue to push for more with grant money meant to help restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Some restaurant managers refer to this idea as “a win-win.”

Kansas City restaurants suffered during the era of social distancing, and some had to close altogether.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas and City Council Member Wes Rogers have asked councilmembers to consider an ordinance that would make grant money available to assist businesses in building outdoor seating.

If it’s approved, an application process should open in the near future, according to Rogers. $15,000 is the most any merchant can receive from the program. Businesses would be required to offer outdoor seating at least six months out of the year.

At Lew’s Grill and Bar in Waldo, managers built an outdoor seating area at the tail end of the COVID era. George Clarke, the restaurant’s general manager, could imagine a business using $15,000 to build fences or a new concrete slab for outdoor seating.

“In those nice weather months, you can increase your revenue by thousands of dollars. That really helps your bottom line, especially with all we’ve been through in the last few years,” Clarke said.

Lucas has promoted this ordinance with the added intention of preparing businesses for the large crowds the World Cup may deliver in 2026. Thus far, the ordinance has received a positive reaction, according to Rogers, who also believes this could strengthen the local economy and public safety.

“We want to see neighborhoods succeed, so there are more people out walking around going to restaurants, and the better off the neighbors will be. If it’s done right, it’s a win for everybody,” Rogers said.
