KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Summer break is almost over and the FOX4 Love Fund is teaming up with Betty Rae’s ice cream to make going back to school a little easier for families across the metro.

“It takes some of the financial burden off the families, but it really gives a boost to the kids,” the Love Fund’s Executive Director, Dionne Pleasant said. “They go back to school really feeling prepared and ready to succeed.”

On Sunday, International Ice Cream Day, 10 percent of Betty Rae’s profits went toward the Love Fund’s annual school supplies drive, helping to buy things like notebooks, pencils and other supplies for students.

“School supplies are incredibly expensive and ask kids to supply for the whole classroom, teachers are supplying,” customer Sara Banner said. “Every little bit helps even if you don’t have kids. They’re our future, whether they’re ours or somebody else’s.”

According to the National Retail Federation, families with kids in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of $890 on school supplies.

With students heading back to school next month, the drive will help ease the financial burden for families.

“We want to connect with the community so we can give as much support to those programs that do a lot of good, so anything we can do to give back is huge,” Betty Rae’s General Manager Zach Doerfler said.
