    Multiple residents displaced after apartment fire in Kansas City

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Fire Department responded to an apartment fire that left multiple people displaced Monday morning.

    The fire was at Southland Apartments near 116th Street and Winchester Avenue.

    Responders said when crews arrived around 10:45 a.m., there was heavy black smoke coming from the building.

    Multiple handlines were used while firefighters searched the units. The searches came back all clear.

    After several minutes of interior firefighting, the crews had to get out of the building. A second alarm was ordered, and fly-pipe operations were started.

    The fire was under control by 11:30 a.m., according to the KCFD.

    The building had 12 apartment units, eight of which were occupied. KCFD said a total of 10 residents requested Red Cross assistance.

    One resident was treated and released on the scene, and one firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat-related issues.

    The cause of the fire is under investigation by KCFD.
