Recently, I ventured into Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que, a spot that's gained some buzz on Xiaohongshu. Known for its fast-food style BBQ, it's a local favorite that's easier on the wallet compared to some high-end joints. The setup is straightforward: order at the counter, grab your food, and find a seat. No tipping required here, which simplifies the experience, especially during busy hours when the lines can stretch long but move surprisingly fast.
The food, however, was a mixed bag. The fries were a standout, perfectly crispy and well-seasoned, easily the highlight of the meal. The meats, on the other hand, left much to be desired. The pork chops were overly greasy without much flavor penetration, and while the beef was tender, it was notably bland. Even the burnt ends, which should be a crispy delight, were more fat than flavor. The sides didn't do much to lift the spirits either, with the potato salad and BBQ beans being quite forgettable.
Despite the popularity, the ambiance isn't the most inviting for a leisurely meal. The loud music combined with the general din of the crowd can overwhelm any conversation. It's a place you go for quick, no-frills dining, not a culinary experience to savor. If you find yourself here, stick to the ribs and fries, and you'll likely leave more satisfied.
