KAPLAN, La. ( KLFY ) – “Where else can you catch, cook, and sleep?” That’s the slogan of one place nestled in the middle of Cajun Country. It’s a bed and breakfast that also offers crawfish excursions. It’s called Crawfish Haven/Mrs. Rose’s Bed and Breakfast.

Barry Toups, Owner of Crawfish Haven /Mrs. Rose’s Bed and Breakfast, explained, “My relatives from Biloxi came crawfishing and had a blast crawfishing and one of them said, ‘Man, you ought to do that commercially and take people crawfishing’ and so I came up with the idea to turn it into a bed and breakfast and offer crawfish excursions. I knew nothing about the hospitality business but Cajuns are known for their food and their hospitality and things just fell into place.”

Toups purchased 28 acres of land in 2010 from Rose Robichaux’s family. Mrs. Rose lived in the home that is now the bed and breakfast, hence the name. Crawfish Haven opened in 2015.

“I’ve had people from Indonesia, from France, from Canada, from the UK, from Ukraine, and it’s fun,” said Toups. “I feel like I’m traveling the world here now.”

A couple from Maryland travel full-time and saw a segment about Crawfish Haven on TV. They made the trip south to experience a crawfish excursion.

Beverly Keller said, “It was great. We went out and got to pull so many (traps) and it was just enjoyable. This whole area is great. Barry has given us so much information and over and above, it exceeded my expectations. I never experienced anything like that. I didn’t even realize that’s how you farmed crawfish. It was just so much fun and I felt so good after I got off of the boat.”

Toups added, “You go out in the boat. We run about 80 traps per group. You get to participate. You get to pick up the traps. You get to dump the crawfish in and if there’s more than one person in the boat doing it, one person picks up the traps, the other puts the crawfish in the sack.”

There are crawfish excursion day trips offered to guests and non-guests of the bed and breakfast. It’s $75 per non-guest and $50 per guest.
