The City of Alameda’s Independence Day parade is canceled for the second year in a row, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still celebrate. Many downtown businesses, including ice cream, frozen yogurt, and bubble tea shops, will be open, although some will have limited hours. Some restaurants will offer special menus with BBQ favorites.

Here are four events to raise your spirits:

Storefronts, homes, and cars will be decorated throughout the city, and prizes awarded in several categories:

    • Most Star-Spangled Spirit
    • Postcards from Alameda
    • Fun in the Sun
    • Boogie on the Bay
    • People’s Choice Award

Use this interactive map to find all locations.

Public viewing is encouraged between Noon and 7:00 pm on Saturday, July 3rd, and on Sunday, July 4th. Enjoy the patriotic displays throughout the city and use your cell phone camera to scan the QR code at each location to vote for your favorites. View more information here.

July 4th Starlight Movie and Band

On Sunday evening, continue your celebration at Alameda Point with live music by local bluegrass band Jubilee, followed by a free outdoor screening of Pixar’s Onward.

Gates open at 6:00 pm, the band performance starts at 6:45 pm, and the movie will start around 8:30 pm. Bring your chairs and blankets! Masks are required.

Snacks will be available for purchase with proceeds benefitting the Alameda Youth Committee and Teen Programs.

This event is at the Alameda Point Multi-Purpose Field, 1101 West Redline Ave. View details here.

The Alameda Recreation & Parks Department, City of Alameda, and FunAmeda Productions are coordinating Porch of July and the Starlight Movie and Band events.

The USS Hornet will commemorate the 4th of July from 10 am to 6 pm. You can relax on the flight deck to the DJing of Tanoa Stewart, grab some food (including Oakland Smokehouse BBQ), and drinks (including beer, wine, and some cocktail choices). You can also enjoy a hot beverage from Travelin’ Joe’s Coffee Truck.

Listen to old-time swing hits in the Hangar Bay with DJ Dan Pollart and watch as the Memorial Squadron conducts a flyover at around 1 PM.

Explore all the great aircraft, restored spaces, Apollo artifacts, and exhibits. There will be no fireworks at the USS Hornet, but the event ends early enough for you to view fireworks elsewhere. You can buy tickets here.

    Alameda Point Antiques Faire

This isn’t a special celebration, but the monthly Antiques Faire at Alameda Point happens to fall on the 4th of July this year. The faire is the largest antiques show in Northern California, with over 800 dealer booths. All items are 20 years old or older. It is a fascinating place to browse vintage and antique home decorations, clothing, furniture, jewelry, art, pottery, books & collectibles.

Parking is free, and masks are required. The fair opens at 6 am, with the last admission at 3 pm. Tickets range from $5 to $20 depending on when you arrive. A shuttle operates between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm to shuttle customers from the parking lot to the entrance.

How will you celebrate Independence Day? Have we missed any events? We'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback in the comments section below.
