LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Little Rock School District Superintendent Dr. Jermall Wright announced his resignation Thursday, leading to some parents expressing concern.

In his resignation letter, Wright thanked the school board for the opportunity to lead the district but said his resignation comes with mixed emotions.

Wright said in his letter, “it is critical that the LRSD Board of Education employ a superintendent whose leadership style, priorities, and core values align with the direction and actions of the school board.”

Many parents of student who attend school in the Little Rock School District are shocked by the news.

Shalonta Edward said, “it kind of brings fear and anxiety.”

Edwards’ daughter is an 11th grader at Little Rock Hall STEM Magnet High School.

“If she had longer than two years, I would consider moving my child from the Little Rock School District,” Edwards said.

She said she felt “Dr. Wright was engaged in how it seemed like he wanted to make a difference.”

Edwards said she believes that Wright didn’t feel appreciated by some members of the district board or director.

“Watching the board meeting it just seemed like it was always some kind of friction,” she said. “It seemed like he had more pushback than support.”

She said it seems like “that took a toll on him.”

I received a statement from Dr. Wright that says “My hope and prayer is that we get serious about doing right by the students in LRSD which means making tough decisions that may negatively impact some adults. Until we are willing to do so, we will keep getting what we’ve always gotten.”

LRSD said Wright was not forced to resign.

Edwards said in a direct message to Wright, “Dr. Wright, I am very sorry that it came to this, but I support you and I hope you do well in whatever you decide to do next.”

“I truly appreciate the words of encouragement and support I’ve received from staff, parents, and community members,” Wright said.

According to the LRSD, Dr. Wright will remain as the superintendent until the district board of directors can finalize their transition plan.

LRSD Board President Michael Mason said, “we are actively working to ensure that a new superintendent is named in a timely manner and are in the process of outlining a comprehensive transition plan.”

Wright also shared a statement with KARK 4 News on Thursday evening.

“I truly appreciate the words of encouragement and support I’ve received from staff, parents, and community members,” Wright said. “My hope and prayer is that we get serious about doing right by the students in LRSD which means making tough decisions that may negatively impact some adults. Until we are willing to do so, we will keep getting what we’ve always gotten.”
