LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A cash infusion is expected to give Arkansas a financial buffer to help respond to disasters.

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed an executive order on Thursday releasing $6 million in funds for statewide hazard mitigation.

The order said that mitigating the effects of future disasters upon local governments is essential to the efficient and orderly operation of state business and that mitigation would protect public facilities from damage. According to the order, mitigating damage would ensure Arkansas citizens’ welfare.

According to the state’s Department of Emergency Management, hazard mitigation educates communities to raise awareness of hazards, build partnerships for risk reduction, develop long-term risk reduction strategies, align risk reduction with other objectives, identify the most significant risks and communicate priorities.
