LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – After Hurricane Helene devastated much of North Carolina, students at Booker T Washington Elementary found a way to give back.

The school runs a food pantry through their community site coordinator and recently they received a huge donation of baby formula.

Once neighbors in the community got what they needed, they decided to send what was left over to those recovering from the storm.

Students loading up the truck said they were happy to help.

For one educator who survived Hurricane Katrina, the event meant so much more.

“It’s emotional. It’s emotional for me,” EAST Facilitator Tricia Gill said. “Because this hurricane was as bad as Katrina, so it feels good to be able to give back. Plus, it just has a personal meaning for me.”

Student Elandis Payne said that helping others is beneficial in multiple ways.

“What comes around always goes around,” Payne said. “So you can help people and then someday, they can probably help you too.”

Lonoke Agriculture engineers volunteered to drive the formula to North Carolina where it will be handed out to hurricane survivors.
