February trial date set for man accused in Fordyce mass shooting

FORDYCE, ARK. – The Fordyce community is still mourning the lives lost during a mass shooting that shook the town in June.

A hearing was held at Dallas County court on Friday for Travis Posey, the man who is facing multiple counts of capital murder and attempted murder charges in connection with the shooting.

Local Norma Powell was at court during the hearing and said the shooting is a hurtful thing to look back on.

“It’s absolutely heartbreaking for the people that lost family and loved ones,” Powell said.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys are waiting for more evidence to be processed by the Arkansas State Crime Lab. The judge set a February trial date but noted delays are a possibility.

“it’s just a horrible tragedy that should have never happened,” Powell said.

The trial is expected to last three weeks and Powell said she wishes nothing but peace upon the families affected.

“I pray for not only his mother but the victims of our town and also for him,” Powell said.

The judge set the prehearing for Jan. 15 and the trial for Feb. 3. If found guilty of capital murder, Posey could face the death penalty or life in prison.
