    Understanding SPF

    What is SPF?

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of how well a sunscreen can protect your skin from UVB rays, the kind of radiation that causes sunburn and contributes to skin cancer.

The higher the SPF number, the greater the level of protection.

While SPF is very important, I have no idea the SPF for my sunscreen recipe. You can research each ingredient and do math and figure it out for yourself, but at this stage in my life, I didn't have the time or mental strength to figure it out right now.

    Benefits of Natural Sunscreen

Here are a few of natural sunscreen benefits:

    Skin-Friendly Ingredients

Natural sunscreens are made with ingredients that are gentle on the skin.

Unlike chemical sunscreens that can cause irritation or allergies, natural sunscreens use mineral-based ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are less likely to cause skin issues.

    Environmental Impact

Many commercial sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm marine life, particularly coral reefs. Natural sunscreens use biodegradable ingredients that are safe for the environment.

    Cost-Effectiveness

Making your own sunscreen can be much cheaper in the long run. You can buy ingredients in bulk and create large batches, saving money compared to frequently purchasing commercial sunscreens.

    Ingredients in Natural Sunscreen

Here are the main ingredients in this DIY natural sunscreen recipe:

    Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide is a key ingredient in a natural sunscreen. It provides broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays and is known for being safe and effective.

    Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is not only moisturizing but also has a natural SPF of around 4-5. It helps to keep the skin hydrated and smooth.

    Shea Butter

Shea butter is rich in vitamins and fatty acids, making it an excellent moisturizer. It also has some natural sun protection properties as well.

    Essential Oils

Essential oils like lavender and carrot seed can provide additional benefits like soothing the skin and adding a pleasant scent to your sunscreen.

Carrot seed essential oil also has incredible benefits and SPF as well!

    DIY Natural Sunscreen Recipe

Here is how to make your own natural sunscreen! This sunscreen recipe makes around 7-8 ounces.

    Ingredients

    • ¼ cup coconut oil
    • ½ cup carrier oil
    • ¼ cup beeswax
    • 2 tablespoons shea butter
    • 4 tablespoons non nano zinc oxide
    • 20 drops carrot seed essential oil (optional)
    • 4oz amber container

    Instructions

Add the shea butter, coconut oil, carrier oil, and beeswax into a heat safe glass container. Slowly melt it on a double broiler or in the microwave, stirring in between.

Once completely melted, add in your non nano zinc oxide. Make sure to mix it thoroughly.

Add in your essential oils and stir once again.

Pour into your container. As it cools down, continue to stir to help mix all your zinc oxide.

    Notes

    • You can use any carrier oil. I used a calendula infused oil for mine.
    • Essential oils are optional. I prefer using carrot seed essential oil or lavender.
    • I do not know the SPF for this recipe as it all depends on the carrier oils you choose to use.
    • If you prefer a tinted sunscreen, you can add a small amount of cocoa powder or mica powder to your mixture.

    Effectiveness of Natural Sunscreen

    Comparing with Commercial Sunscreens

Some people believe that natural sunscreens are less effective than chemical ones. However, natural sunscreens can provide excellent protection without the harmful side effects.

Natural sunscreens can be just as effective as commercial ones when used correctly. They provide broad-spectrum protection without the harmful chemicals.

    Scientific Evidence

Studies have shown that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are effective at blocking UV radiation. However, it's essential to apply them properly for maximum protection.
