Benefits of DIY Garbage Disposal Cleaner

Here are some of the main benefits of making your own sink disposal cleaner:

    1. Cost-Effective

Making your own garbage disposal cleaner is actually significantly cheaper than purchasing one from the store.

The ingredients—baking soda, salt, castile soap, and lemon essential oil—are inexpensive and can be used for multiple cleaning tasks around the house.

By investing in these basic ingredients, you can save money in the long run, especially if you get items in bulk.

    2. Eco-Friendly

Commercial cleaners often contain synthetic chemicals that can harm the environment when washed down the drain.

A homemade garbage disposal cleaner uses natural ingredients that are biodegradable and non-toxic, reducing your household’s environmental impact.

    3. Safe for Your Home

The ingredients in a DIY sink disposal cleaner are safe for your family and even pets.

Most regular disposal cleaners contain harmful chemicals that can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation, and other health problems.

By using natural ingredients, you eliminate these risks and ensure a safer home environment for you and your family. This is the main reason I love making my own!

    4. Effective Cleaning Power

Despite how simple it is to make, this DIY cleaner is highly effective at breaking down grease, eliminating odors, and removing food residues.

The combination of baking soda, salt, castile soap, and lemon essential oil works really well to clean and freshen your garbage disposal thoroughly. I was pretty surprised!

    5. Pleasant Aroma

Lemon essential oil not only has powerful cleaning properties but also leaves a fresh, pleasant scent in your kitchen.

Unlike the chemical smell of many commercial cleaners, this natural aroma is refreshing and welcoming. I try to only use lemon essential oil in my cleaning products because it just is so uplifting and smells great!

    Why the Recipe Works

The effectiveness of DIY garbage disposal cleaner lies in the properties of its four main ingredients: baking soda, salt, castile soap, and lemon essential oil.

Each of these ingredients plays a crucial role in achieving a clean and odor-free garbage disposal.

    Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

Baking soda is a mild abrasive that helps to scrub away food particles and grime from the surfaces inside your garbage disposal.

It is also a natural deodorizer, neutralizing unpleasant odors and leaving your disposal smelling fresh. Its alkaline nature helps to break down acidic food residues and grease.

    Salt

Salt acts as an abrasive agent, enhancing the scrubbing power of baking soda. It helps to dislodge stubborn food particles and prevent the build-up of grease.

Additionally, salt has mild disinfectant properties, which can help to reduce bacterial growth inside the disposal.

    Castile Soap

Castile soap is a natural, vegetable-based soap that is gentle yet effective at cutting through grease and grime.

It helps to emulsify oils and fats, making them easier to wash away. Castile soap is biodegradable and free from synthetic detergents and harmful chemicals, making it an eco-friendly choice.

    Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil is a powerful natural cleaner with antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.

It helps to disinfect the garbage disposal and eliminate harmful bacteria. The oil's acidic nature aids in breaking down grease and grime, while its fresh citrus scent neutralizes odors and leaves your kitchen smelling clean.

How to Make Your Own Garbage Disposal Cleaner

Here’s a simple recipe for making your own DIY garbage disposal cleaner:

    Supplies

    • 1 Cup Baking Soda
    • 1/2 Cup Salt
    • 1/4 Cup Castille Soap
    • 30 Drops of Lemon Essential Oil
    • 1/4 Cup Water

    Instructions

Add baking soda and salt to a mixing bowl. Next add in the water and castile soap.

If adding a scent add about 30 drops.

Mix together until it is like a paste consistency.

Line your baking sheet with parchment paper and using the cookie scoop place them with space in between on the sheet.

Mine made about 20. Let these dry for at least 24 hours.

How to Clean Garbage Disposal With Baking Soda Tablets

    1. Run hot water down the garbage disposal for a few seconds to rinse away any loose foods.
    2. Turn off the water and put one tablet into the disposal.
    3. Turn on the garbage disposal and run cold water to mix the tablet to remove any dislodged debris.
    4. For regular maintenance, use this cleaner once a week or as needed to keep your garbage disposal fresh and clean.

Tips for Maintaining a Clean Garbage Disposal

Here are a few more tips to maintaining a clean sink disposal:

    1. Avoid Putting Certain Foods Down the Disposal: Fibrous foods like celery, potato peels, and coffee grounds can clog the disposal. Avoid disposing of these items to prevent blockages.

    2. Run Cold Water: Always run cold water when using the garbage disposal. Cold water solidifies any grease or fat, making it easier for the disposal to chop it up and prevent clogs.

    3. Regular Cleaning: Regularly clean your garbage disposal with the DIY cleaner to prevent build-up and odors. A little maintenance goes a long way in keeping your disposal in good working condition.

    4. Freshen with Citrus: Occasionally grinding citrus peels (such as lemon or orange peels) in the disposal can help to freshen it and remove minor odors.

    DIY Sink Disposal Tablets Wrap-Up

Creating your own garbage disposal cleaner is a simple, cost-effective, and eco-friendly way to maintain a fresh and clean kitchen.

Give it a try next time your sink disposal needs cleaning!
