    What is Chamomile Oil?

Chamomile is extracted from the flowers of the chamomile plant into a carrier oil.

It's known for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties, making it popular in many skincare products.

Chamomile oil can be made by infusing chamomile flowers in a carrier oil, creating a chamomile infused oil that's perfect for DIY projects like salves and massage oils.

    Benefits of Chamomile Infused Oil

There are numerous chamomile infused oil benefits that make it a must-have in everyone's home. Here are a few of my favorite benefits:

    • Soothing Skin Irritations: The anti-inflammatory properties of chamomile help reduce redness, itching, and irritation. It is perfect for those who struggle with eczema.
    • Promotes Relaxation: Chamomile’s calming scent is known for reducing anxiety and improving sleep quality. We love using it in our sleep salve recipe because it is so calming, for kids and adults!
    • Natural Moisturizer: When combined with a nourishing oil like avocado oil, chamomile helps hydrate and soften the skin.

There are quite a few more benefits, but these are just a few of my top favorites.

Ingredients for Your DIY Chamomile Oil

To make your own chamomile oil at home, you will need:

    • Chamomile Flowers: Dried is best. You can use fresh, but you will need to dry them yourself to avoid mold growing in your infused oil.
    • Avocado Oil: I personally love and use avocado oil for just about everything, especially when cooking, but any carrier oil you have will work.

That's it! Those are all the ingredients you need to create a simple yet effective chamomile infused oil recipe!

How to Make Chamomile Oil: Step-by-Step Guide

Now, let's learn how to make your own chamomile infused oil! This recipe makes around 1 cup of total infused oil, give or take a bit.

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup chamomile
    • 1 cup avocado oil
    • Parchment paper (I prefer unbleached, but whatever works)

    Instructions for Chamomile Infused Oil

Add the chamomile flowers to a glass jar, making it about halfway full.

Then, add in the avocado oil to fully cover the chamomile. Cover the jar with a lid and parchment paper and keep it in a dark spot for a few weeks, shaking ever so often.

After after about 6 weeks, strain the oil through cheesecloth or a mesh strainer. Then enjoy!

How to Make Chamomile Oil from Tea

If you don't have fresh or dried chamomile flowers, you can still make a DIY chamomile oil using chamomile tea bags!

Make sure to choose an organic chamomile tea to avoid additives.

From there, just empty your tea bags into a glass jar and add the carrier oil on top.

Follow the same infusion and straining process as the recipe above.

Depending on the tea, you might need to use a coffee filter as a strainer if the chamomile pieces are super tiny.

    Chamomile Infused Oil Uses

Now that you know how to make chamomile oil, here are some ways to use it:

    • Massage Oil: Use it as a massage oil to relax muscles and reduce tension. Plus, the smell is so soothing too!
    • DIY Chamomile Salve Recipe: Combine your chamomile oil with beeswax to create a soothing salve for dry skin, lips, or minor cuts.
    • Facial Oil: Apply a few drops of the oil to your face at night for a natural, hydrating facial treatment.
    • Hair Care: Massage into your scalp to soothe irritation and promote healthy hair growth.
    • Chamomile Lip Balm: You can combine this with beeswax and shea butter to make a amazing lip balm too.

You really cannot go wrong with an infused oil with chamomile!

    FAQs About Chamomile Oil

    • Can I use other carrier oils? Yes, jojoba oil, olive oil, coconut oil, or any carrier oil can be used instead of avocado oil.
    • How long does chamomile oil last? Homemade chamomile oil can last up to 6-12 months if stored in a cool, dark place. Depending on how clean your jars are and utensils used to make this recipe, it might last a lot longer too! I usually use mine all up before that timeframe though.
    • Is chamomile oil safe for sensitive skin? Chamomile oil is generally safe, but always perform a patch test to check for allergies if you are worried.
