People in New York are afraid to go to work as a result of the recent string of horrific attacks

    2022-08-15

On April 13, in New York City, people can be seen walking past a subway stop in the middle of Manhattan. In a recent report of David Gura, after a string of high-profile attacks recently, many of the city's top CEOs report that their employees are expressing concern about going back to work. These CEOs say that their employees are afraid to return to work.

It is imperative that New York City's workers report back to work as soon as possible. According to npr.org, the economy of that region is reliant on it. However, it is currently dealing with a particularly challenging issue: as a result of the numerous horrific attacks that have taken place in the city's subway system this year, employees are reporting to their employers that they are afraid to return to work.n place in the city's subway system this year, employees are reporting to their employers that they are afraid to return to work.

According to Kathryn Wylde, president and CEO of the Partnership for New York City, who arranged the meetings, several of the most influential CEOs in the city confronted Mayor Eric Adams this year in two separate meetings and demanded answers from him. The meetings were organized by Wylde

The executives were very firm and said, 'We can't in good conscience send our people back to work or tell them to take the subways until we see proof that you're doing something about this,'" she says.

Following a string of high-profile assaults on commuters, the CEOs organized a response to the situation.

Michelle Go, a consultant for Deloitte who was 40 years old was killed when she was pushed in front of an approaching train in the Times Square subway station. This incident caused widespread shock in the city.

During rush hour in April, a person with a gun opened fire, firing 33 shots at passing commuters. In May, a fellow passenger was responsible for the death of Daniel Enriquez, an executive at Goldman Sachs. The assassinations had a tense effect on the community, and Adams, who spoke to the media immediately after Go's murder, was aware of this fact.

Adams's statement at the time reflected his sentiments at the time: "To lose a New Yorker in this manner would just continue to increase the worries of persons not using our subway system." According to data provided by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the number of complaints lodged against the public transportation system, which include instances of assault and harassment, is nearly equivalent to what it was at the same period in 2019 at this stage. However, the number of people using the subway is still nowhere near what it was before the outbreak. It is approximately sixty percent of what it was in 2019.

At a vigil held for Michelle Go on January 18 in New York, NY, Mayor Eric Adams of New York City gave a speech. The Times Square subway station was where Go met her untimely end.

The attacks in the subway are leading to a perception that the rate of crime in the city is increasing. According to the statistics compiled by the police, there have been fewer homicides so far this year compared to this time last year, which was when the nation was only beginning to emerge from the lockdowns that had prevailed throughout much of the year 2020. However, there has been a significant increase in the number of homicides compared to the same time in 2019, before the pandemic. In the meantime, the number of violent crimes classified as felonies has increased year to date in comparison to both 2021 and 2019. A recent poll conducted by Quinnipiac University found that almost half of registered voters believe that crime is "the most pressing issue facing New York City today," despite the fact that the city's overall crime rate is still at historically low levels.

Because Go and Enriquez both worked for significant financial organizations, their murders have also caused Wall Street to be thrown into disarray. Additionally, financial institutions have been at the forefront of encouraging people to resume their normal work schedules. The Chief Executive Officer of Goldman Sachs, David Solomon, is aware of the concerns regarding safety. In a recent interview with NPR, he told the station, "We have to have a safe environment for individuals. I believe that maintaining public safety is absolutely essential for the vibrancy of cities, and maintaining the vitality of cities is absolutely essential for the economic activity in our country."

Solomon, who spent his childhood in the suburbs outside of New York City, said that there was a greater incidence of crime when he was a child during the decades spanning from the 1970s to the 1980s. He recalled that there were stringent regulations on where he was allowed to go and how late he could stay out. Solomon also stated that when he was bringing up his family in the city many years later, it was "extraordinarily" secure for them. When asked about the current, he stated, "The city is unquestionably more dangerous." He described it as being "a little grittier" and "a little dirtier."

There are problems with public safety throughout the country, not just in New York City. Citadel's headquarters will soon be moving from Chicago to Miami, as billionaire Ken Griffin recently made the decision to do so. He cited the city's persistent issues with crime as his motivation for the move. "recruiting top talent from across the world to Chicago given the escalating and senseless violence in the city," the hedge fund stated in a statement to NPR that it was having a difficult time doing because of the rising and senseless violence in Chicago.

On July 25 in New York City, people may be seen walking about outside of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Many companies on Wall Street, notably Goldman Sachs, have been putting pressure on their employees to get back to work.

Obviously, no two people have the same idea of what constitutes a safe environment. Wylde, who works with the Partnership for New York City, is concerned about how this would affect young people, as surveys have shown that they feel more anxious about using the subway and about crime in general. When CEOs on Wall Street discuss preparations for returning to the office, they frequently highlight how vital it is for young people to return to the workplace as soon as possible so that they do not miss out on opportunities for mentoring and other forms of professional development.

Wylde, a New Yorker since the late 1960s, recalls times when crime was considerably greater than it is today, but she also points out that many current residents arrived when the city was safer. For a long time, New York was considered the safest major city in the United States, if not the entire world. According to Wylde, an entire generation of New Yorkers grew up without worrying about their own security. And executives like Wylde worry that if the concerns about safety continue to take root, New York City may lose part of its allure to corporations and workers.

Have you ever considered to be more cautious when you go to work? What are some of the reasons why people commit mass murder and if they can be stopped? What are your thoughts?
