MADISON — It was a wild weekend for the Milton softball team as the Red Hawks stopped one of the most impressive winning streaks in the country to advance to the WIAA Division 1 state finals before ultimately falling short.

Milton pulled off a stunning 5-3 upset over Kaukauna, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, which had won 108 consecutive games and each of the past three WIAA Division 1 state championships, before falling to Kenosha Bradford 9-3.

Down 3-2, Jenna Benash laced a bases-loaded two-run base hit down the right-field line to put Milton’s up in the top of the seventh of the semifinal.

Molly Baker hit a popup that Kaukauna’s shortstop couldn’t squeeze, and another run scored to make it 5-3.

Gwen Baker then came on and retired Kaukauna’s potent 2-3-4 hitters in order in the bottom of the frame to give the Red Hawks the huge win over the Galloping Ghosts on Friday night at Goodman Diamond.

In the final, Kenosha Bradford scored nine runs on 10 hits to beat Milton 9-3 and force the Red Hawks (26-3) to settle for second place.

Celia May and Angela Parker both drove in two runs to help propel the Red Devils (28-3) to their first state title.

Baker struck out eight Red Devils on Saturday but allowed at least one baserunner in every inning.

    • DIVISION 2: Waupun (20-4) won its first state title in program history as it defeated Mosinee (29-2) 7-3.

Pitcher Addison Braun had an RBI triple in the fourth and a grand slam in the fifth inning. She also struck out five in the complete-game victory.

    • DIVISION 3: Prescott (21-8), who had defeated Brodhead 4-1 on Friday, battled through a 77-minute rain delay to win its first state championship in a 3-1 win over Laconia (21-9).

Leah French’s two-run single in the fourth put the Cardinals ahead for good as Ella Stewart allowed just three hits in the victory.

    • DIVISION 4: Fall Creek (30-2) also won its first state title with a 7-0 shutout over Cuba City (23-3) in the final.

Fall Creek took advantage of five hits, two Cubans’ errors and two wild pitches in a six-run sixth inning. Emma Westrate went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Crickets

    • DIVISION 5: Pacelli (28-2) bucked the trend of programs winning its first ever titles as the Cardinals won a second-straight championship with a 4-3 win over Oakfield (26-4).

Doubles from Kaylin Yenter and Amelia Martini combined with two errors and a wild pitch helped Pacelli score three runs and overcome a 3-1 deficit in the fifth.
