AMES, Iowa (KCAU) — The Iowa Department of Transportation and the Nebraska Department of Transportation have set up a community survey to help inform decisions on the future of the Decatur Bridge.

According to a release from the Iowa DOT , the survey is available starting Feb. 1 and ending March 15. It is designed to “help inform a Decatur Bridge Feasibility Study evaluating options to improve the Missouri River crossing.”

The Decatur Bridge connects Iowa Highway 175 in Monona County and Nebraska Highway 51 in Burt County across the Missouri River. The release states that a long-term solution is needed for the “aging” bridge, which has stood since 1951.

The Decatur Bridge Project, currently in its first phase, involves planning and design over three phases and multiple years. If plans for construction go through based on funding, that could begin as early as 2029.

The Decatur Bridge Project’s website can be found here .

People can take an online or hard-copy survey (available at five locations) to share how often they use the bridge, any issues they may have with it, and how important they believe it is for connecting the two regions.

The website also features an interactive map, allowing people to leave pins and comments on specific locations.
