    South Dakota communities in Siouxland holding municipal elections

    SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — While the South Dakota primary elections are set to take place in June, some communities are having local elections next week.

    In South Dakota, municipalities can choose to have their local elections on one of three dates: the second Tuesday in April, the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June (June 4), or the third Tuesday in June (June 18). Some communities are choosing to go with the first option and will have their elections on Tuesday, April 9.

    The communities in Siouxland that are having April 9 municipal elections are North Sioux City, Jefferson, and Yankton.

    In Yankton , there are three city commissioner seats up for election. Yankton has a total of nine city commissioners who serve three-year terms. Yankton residents will vote for three of the four candidates. They are as listed:

    • Bridget Benson (incumbent)
    • Craig Sommer
    • Michael Villanueva (incumbent)
    • David Carda

    In Jefferson , residents will only have to vote for one position, which is Ward 1 of City Council. City council members serve two-year terms. Below are the two candidates for the one seat:

    • Mark LaFleur (incumbent)
    • Sarah Lake

    North Sioux City will also be having a municipal election for its city council . There are four wards with two council members from each ward. One seat from each ward is up for election, and terms are for four years. You can view the candidates for each seat below:

    City Council – Ward 1

    • Robert “Bob” Davis
    • Tena Carpenter (incumbent)

    City Council – Ward 2

    • Karri Wilde
    • Lynn Hoffman
    • Dan Parks (incumbent)

    City Council – Ward 3

    • Matt Vanderpool
    • Kodi Benson (incumbent)

    City Council – Ward 4

    • Gregory C. Meyer (incumbent)
    • Shane Chartier

    Polls for the above races will open April 9 at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

    Other communities, like Vermillion, will have their elections on June 4, combined with the primary election day for the state of South Dakota.
