ELK POINT, S.D. (KCAU) — During a public hearing, community members of Elk Point and Jefferson got a chance to see plans for how the Elk Point-Jefferson School District wants to provide more space for students .

The district wants to add on the lunchroom and remodel that existing space for educational purposes. Officials said the lunchroom would be an expansion project of a new kitchen, then a new multi-purpose cafeteria space. The current kitchen is expected to be transformed into a middle school science room.

People voiced their questions to school officials about the projects. One of the topics was potentially using certificates, not bonds, to pay for the projects.

“A bond can go up to 30 years, a certificate is a max of 20,” superintendent Philip Schonebaum said. “But how you pay it is just a little bit different. A bond is an automatic tax burden on your district whereas a certificate is not.”

The school district plans to talk more about the projects in their regular board meeting this month.
