ELK POINT, S.D. (KCAU) — Plans to create more space for students in the building are moving forward for the Elk Point-Jefferson School District.

The plans include building a single-story addition that’s about 10,800 square feet. That area would have a new kitchen and equipment, as well as a multi-purpose cafeteria and activity space. The current kitchen space will be turned into a middle school science room.

On Monday night, the school board agreed to start taking bids for a Construction Manager at Risk. Superintendent Philip Schonebaum said the district will start advertising for the position almost immediately.

“It’s usually about a month process to garner the applications,” Schonebaum said. “Let them do a walkthrough, do the interview process. It’ll be aggressive to select at the May board meeting, but hopefully we can get enough applicants and do an interview process prior to May 13. That gives us about five weeks. If that’s not the case, we’ll do it in in June. Timetable for design would be about five months.”

Officials said they hope that ground can break in the spring of next year.

The cost of the project is not to exceed $7.5 million dollars. The district will be using capital outlay funds to pay for it.
