Storm Lake native Ben McCollum introduced as new Drake men’s basketball head coach

DES MOINES, IOWA (WHO) – The announcement came last week, but on Tuesday morning Ben McCollum was officially introduced as Drake’s new men’s basketball coach, replacing Darian DeVries.

McCollum, a 1999 Storm Lake St. Mary’s graduate, comes from Northwest Missouri State after coaching the Bearcats for the last 15 years. During that time he won 4 national championships and was named Division II Coach of the Year five times.

McCollum was born in Iowa City and grew up in Storm Lake. He played basketball at North Iowa Area Community College and Northwest Missouri State.

McCollum says he’s still working on a staff, and recruiting what will likely be an entirely new roster.
