SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – The end of the school year is quickly approaching and one Sioux City class is putting the final touches on their biggest project yet.

High schoolers in the Sioux City Career Academy construction pathway are finishing up their 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house that is now up for sale .

“It really shows older generations that newer generations do know how to work and we are building our work ethic,” said North High School senior Katelynn Adams.

After a year of hard work, more than 25 high schoolers have been able to build a home from the ground up.

“We get kids of varying skills. Some that didn’t have any skills, now they have some. Others that had some skills, they’re really well-refined now,” said Sioux City Career Academy Construction & Home Building instructor Rick Niles. “It’s been enjoyable. You have to think about how we start with kids that don’t even know what the tools are.”

“At the beginning of the class I couldn’t tell my screwdrivers apart,” said Adams. “Building something as big as this with just a few high schoolers, it really shows people what kids nowadays can do if they put their mind to it.”

But the skills learned in the construction pathway go beyond home building.

“I’ve learned leadership skills and social skills that I didn’t have before I came to this class,” said Adams. “Before this class I could barely talk to a stranger, and now I feel very comfortable talking to people.”

With the open house just two weeks away the students are putting some final finishes on someone’s future home.

“I’ve always been afraid when people tour the house that they’re going to pick out every little imperfection,” said Adams. “But it seems so far everybody has been very happy with what we’ve done here.”

With the house standing tall, it’ll remind the students of their hard work even after the school year ends.

“That will actually be really cool to see,” said East High School senior Jadon Clay. “Just driving by and seeing it, knowing that you built it. I think that would be awesome.”

“Somebody is going to get a house that’s going to have a lot of love put into it,” said Niles. “These kids have poured out their hearts, and come in here, worked hard and they take a lot of pride in it.”

Interested buyers are invited to tour the home April 25 from 5:30 to 7 pm at the Sioux City Community School District`s construction trades building, located at 3000 Hwy 75 North in Sioux City.
