SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KCAU) — For the ninth and perhaps last time, the ponies are in the gate at the racetrack at Atokad Park in South Sioux City.

On both Friday and Saturday, Ho-Chunk Inc. is hosting three races with four thoroughbreds per race. Two of each days races will feature Nebraska-bred horses. Post time Saturday is 1 p.m.

Ho-Chunk Inc. has held the racing license since 2016 and has plans for a casino at the track site.

“We will continue the races going forward,” Ho-Chunk Capital Business Operations Manager Marshall Bass said. “This might be the last year, we might have another one here next year. But in the grand scheme, the big plan at the end is to have these races in a full track at our new facility here in South Sioux City.”

There is no timetable for the new track or casino, but the hope is to break ground in the next year.
