SIOUX CITY, Ia (KCAU)- The Gehlen Catholic Jays are coming off a season they finished 4-5. They lost to eventual Iowa Class A State Champion, West Hancock, in the first round of the last season’s playoffs.

The Jays have some firepower coming back this season. Running back Kale Pearson rushed for over 1100 yards and had nine touchdowns. Quarterback Cole Mccarty had over 1300 total yards and had 14 touchdowns.

They will need that firepower because Ty Tauber and Trenton Struss are gone from last season’s team. They accounted for 21 of the teams 29 touchdowns last year.

The team wants to add depth behind their starting lineup.

“We’re going to have to build some depth. We have really good starting eleven on both sides of the ball but to continue as a small school, we have to continue to find young guys who step in and help us in spot duty or if injuries happen. It is football and injuries happen. We need to continue to get better each and every day and somehow build depth.” said head coach Jeremy Schindler.

Gehlen Catholic opens the season on August 30th on the road against Hinton.
