SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Sioux City’s Parks and Recreation Department has been working around the clock since the June floods to fix public areas that got damaged.

The Big Sioux River Trail and the Riverfront Trail were submerged in the floodwaters, alongside portions of Chris Larsen Park. As of Tuesday night, however, Chris Larsen Park and the Big Sioux River Trail are repaired and open to the public. However, roughly three miles of the Riverfront Trail will remain closed.

“The Riverfront Trail between the boat ramp and Riverside Park is closed indefinitely,” Matt Salvatore with the city’s parks and recreation department said. “We don’t anticipate that that trail will reopen until next spring. We’ve had some pretty significant bank erosion sloughing. The Iowa DOT is actually working on establishing those areas right now and then trail work can begin after that construction has taken place.”

The Chris Larsen boat ramp recently opened back up . However, Salvatore recommends using caution as the water level is too low for certain boats.
