Harold Carter, 27, of Memphis, Tennessee was arrested by Vermillion police on Monday after stealing money from a gas station and leading police on two different chases, a release from the Vermillion Police Department said.

According to the release, police were alerted that Carter had allegedly stolen a large sum of money from a Casey’s General Store in Vermillion. Information obtained from court documents specifies that he stole $19,436.00 that was being delivered by an armored vehicle.

Carter had fled the store and was found hiding near a home in the 1200 block of E Cherry Street where he began to flee officers on foot. After a brief chase, police were able to arrest Carter, the release said. Police were able to locate the bag of money, along with a stolen handgun, where Carter was attempting to hide from police.

The release states that Carter eventually escaped from the patrol vehicle while awaiting transport to the jail. Cater fled in handcuffs and ran into the road on Cherry Street and was hit by a car. Police were once again able to take Carter into custody.

Police said that Carter’s girlfriend, Audrey Taylor, 28, also of Memphis, had allegedly assaulted the driver of the vehicle.

Police later went back to the residence where Carter was attempting to hide with a search warrant where they found a second stolen handgun in the trunk of a vehicle that belonged to Carter.

Carter was taken to an area hospital to be checked for injuries before being booked into the Clay County Jail where he is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Carter has been charged with grand theft, escape from custody, and two counts of possession of stolen handguns as grand theft. Taylor was charged with simple assault and has been released on bond.
