SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — High school graduates will soon start their first year of college, but some of them may feel a bit nervous about taking such a big step.

Morningside University is offering a mentorship program to make sure first-year students have all the help they need. The program was started last year with only a select amount of students. Officials say that after a successful first year, they decided to make sure every freshman is matched with a mentor to teach them the proper guidance and make sure they feel right at home.

“Personally, I think it’s huge,” Steph Peter with the university’s admissions office said. “I think it’s some reassurance for our parents as well, so these parents that are sending these students to this new place, to know that there’s someone else that’s kind of a safeguard for them, a confidant for them, a place for support or guidance as well.”

University officials say they go through a process to make sure the peer mentor they select is the right pick for each incoming freshman.
