CANTON, S.D. (KELO) — A Tea, South Dakota man has received a $1 million bond in a case involving the murder of a 19-year-old man.

Shortly after 10 a.m. on Aug. 14, 59-year-old Timothy Overton appeared in courtroom 2B at the Lincoln County Courthouse for his arraignment.

Overton is facing four charges in connection with the death of Isaiah Morales, who he is accused of killing on June 3.

The first charge, laid out by Judge Jennifer Mammenga, is murder in the first degree, which carries a minimum sentence of death or life in prison, as well as a $50,000 fine.

The other three charges are all third-degree felony aggravated assault, each of which carries a 15-year sentence and a $30,000 fine.

Overton’s plea was entered as non-guilty, and the state asked that bond and conditions be set.

The state requested a $1 million bond, as well as an order of no contact with the family of Isaiah Morales and with the victim in another previous case against Overton in which he was charged with assault.

Overton’s attorney stated that since his bond in the other case has been set at $500,000, an additional bond of $1 million would be excessive.

Judge Mammenga opted to approve the bond amount of $1 million, as well as the no-contact order, which applies whether he is in or out of custody.
