Super Blue Sturgeon Moon to light up the sky Monday night

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – Look up in the night sky Monday night and you’ll be treated to a full moon (weather-permitting, of course). But it’s not just any full moon.

Monday, August 19, will feature the Sturgeon moon , a name given to the August full moon by Algonquin tribes due to the increased ease of catching of sturgeon fish in the Great Lakes and other bodies of water at this point in the year.

Other names for the August full moon include: the Red Moon, the Corn/Green Corn Moon, the Barley Moon, The Herb Moon, The Grain Moon and The Dog Moon, according to NASA .

Monday’s Sturgeon Moon will also be a supermoon and a blue moon.

A supermoon happens when either a new or full moon occurs within 90% of the moon’s closest approach to Earth. As a result the moon may appear bigger and brighter than a normal full moon, usually the increased brightness is more noticeable than the increase in size.

A blue moon occurs as either monthly or seasonal. A monthly blue moon is when there are two full moons in a single month, something that only happens every couple of years. And a seasonal blue moon is the third full moon in a season with four full moons instead of the typical three. Also, in case you’re wondering, no, the moon is not actually blue during a blue moon!

Monday’s blue moon will be a seasonal blue moon, with full moons previously on June 5th and July 6th and the final full moon of the summer season on September 2nd.

The next monthly blue moon won’t be until May 2026 and the next seasonal blue moon won’t take place until May 2027.
