SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – The Morningside University campus has been busy as students have been moving in with classes set to start soon as well as the fall sports season. Many teams hit the podium, including the Mustangs football team.

Morningside finished its 2023 campaign with a 9-3 record, the first season for the Mustangs with ten or fewer wins this decade. 2023 also marked the first time they did not win the GPAC in 12 years. The ‘Stangs feel they’re more than ready to return, bringing back pieces such as standout wide receive Zach Norton. The Sioux Falls native is coming off his second consecutive season with 10 or more TD’s.

Defensively, All-GPAC First Team pick Issac Pingel is back at linebacker to lead a veteran group. Morningside has big aspirations, but they’re focused on the small details that add up to success.

“We talk, all the time, about winning the day. You’ve just got to win the day you’re on, you can’t worry about a championship game or a game four weeks from now or anything else. Let’s work on winnng the day, and that’s kind of been the philosophy all the time, you work today for what you want to accomplish tomorrow.” Morningside head coach Steve Ryan said.

“Everything we do is preach the importance of the little things, because that is what shows up. It’s not the accumulation of the big things, it’s the accumulation of the little things in everything we do. Everything that is done on that field is preached that the little things do matter.” Morningside running back Ryan Cole added. I think it is evident throughout the season that’s something we pride ourselves on, just doing the little things right.”

Morningside begins the year at home against Benedictine on August 31st at 6 p.m.
