HAWARDEN, Iowa (KCAU) — June’s severe flooding has heavily impacted many homes. Residents in Hawarden have had some help from a nonprofit organization to get their houses cleaned up.

The program provides volunteers from AmeriCorp to help with the cleanup efforts for those affected by disasters. The organization has been located in Clay County and Cherokee County, where they go day by day cleaning up homes to help them get a little bit of weight off their shoulders.

“Working with the survivors and being able to help one person kind of get back to their normal life is kind of the best feeling and the most important work,” team leader Brooke Hults said. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else right now.”

The organization has been at it for a month and plans to wrap things up by the end of August.
