FEMA going door-to-door in southeast South Dakota neighborhoods to help residents apply for disaster assistance

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KCAU) — FEMA teams will be visiting affected neighborhoods in southeast South Dakota counties to help residents apply for disaster assistance.

FEMA said in a release that teams will be visiting residents in Davison, Lincoln, Turner, and Union counties who were impacted by severe storms, straight-line winds, and flooding.

The FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance teams will help residents apply with FEMA to address any needs as well as to provide status updates on applications and referrals to community resources.

The FEMA teams can be identified by a federal photo identification as well as FEMA clothing or vests. Anyone visited is encouraged to ask for the officials photo identification before giving any personal information.

Residents do not have to meet with FEMA in person to apply for assistance. Other ways to apply for assistance with FEMA can be found below.

• Go online to DisasterAssistance.gov for English, or DisasterAssistance.gov/es for Spanish.
• Use the FEMA mobile app in English or Spanish.
• Call the disaster assistance helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362) anytime from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central Time seven days a week until further notice. Multilingual operators are available. Anyone using a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, can give FEMA the number for that service.

In addition, a Disaster Recovery Center will be opening in Union County on Friday afternoon and will then be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. seven days a week.
