    Heat Advisories issued as dangerous heat returns this weekend

    SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – The summer scorch is back on for the final full weekend of August!

    Siouxland is expecting highs into the upper 80s for our Saturday with heat indices into the upper 90s and even hotter for Sunday.

    Keeping You & Your Family Safe During Extreme Heat

    Highs Sunday are forecast to be in the mid 90s with heat indices in excess of 105° possible.

    Heat Advisories have already been issued for nearly all of Siouxland from 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon through 8 PM Sunday evening.

    This heat and humidity increases the potential for heat-related illnesses throughout the weekend. You’ll want to ensure you know and can recognize signs and symptoms of heat illnesses and know what to do.

    Make sure you’re limiting your time outside and in the sun during peak heating of the day, wear loose, lightweight, light colored clothes, and take frequent breaks in air conditioning if you do have to be outside.

    It’s also going to be important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of cool, not cold, water and make sure you’re replenishing fluids and electrolytes lost through sweat by drinking low-sugar sports drinks.

    You should also check in on relatives and neighbors, especially those who are older and more vulnerable to extreme heat.

    Summer Sun Safety

    Finally, NEVER leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles, even briefly. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

    The National Weather Service also advises that “to reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
