SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — It’s officially the end of summer vacation, with schools starting the 2024-25 academic year Friday.

The Sioux City Community School District (SCCSD) welcomed back students with open arms.

“The first day of school is always exciting,” superintendent Dr. Rod Earleywine said. “For the little ones that might be in their first year, there’s a little apprehension, a few tears, but overall a very exciting day. We’re looking forward to another great year in the Sioux City Community School District.”

With the new Iowa law tackling chronic absenteeism , the district has put a system in place this school year to ensure students are in the classroom learning.

“Attendance is obviously critical to student achievement, so we always are working on getting students here and active and engaged every day,” Dr. Earleywine said. “So a few changes there, but overall I’m just looking forward to a great school year.”

Starting this year, all SCCSD schools will have a two hour early out each Friday.
