CHEROKEE, Iowa (KCAU) — A Cherokee man has been sentenced for a 2022 incident in which he hit and killed a bicyclist.

Casey Herwig, 30, pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death with no knowledge of death, a class D felony, on July 15 as part of a plea agreement, documents show. On Aug. 26, a judge accepted the plea and sentenced Herwig to five years in prison.

Herwig must also pay a fine of $1,025 and $150,000 in restitution to the victim’s estate. Herwig’s incarceration may be eligible for parole.

Court documents stated that Herwig was driving a vehicle and hit a bicyclist on Dec. 26, 2022. That evening, officials received a report of a bicyclist laying on the road at 6th and West Willow Street in Cherokee.

Herwig was arrested on a warrant in May 2023 .
