INWOOD, Iowa (KCAU) – The West Lyon Wildcats is coming off a 9-2 season that ended in a one-point loss in the 2A state quarterfinals, completing its eighth consecutive season with three or fewer losses.

West Lyon returns 18 starters from last season. Quarterback Bryson Childress notched over 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns while running back and USF Tate Hawf compiled over 1,000 yards to go with 18 touchdowns.

Competing in a competitive district full of good teams from top to bottom, West Lyon hopes its veteran presence proves to play a factor. West Lyon says they’re using last season’s loss as motivation to return to the UNI-Dome.

“We have really good leadership out of our senior class this year. That’s a really big strength, that’s a really big deal. Kids off season was really good. They worked really hard. I think a strength is we have competition at all positions. Kids have to fight to be out on the field.” West Lyon head coach Jay Rozeboom said.

“We’re putting in that work, grinding every day to get to that goal. Last year was definitely a hard loss to spirit lake. They were a good team. Losing to them was definitely something that has been in the back of our minds all year. Putting in that work in the offseason to get to that goal.” West Lyon quarterback Bryson Childress added.

West Lyon kicks off its season at home against Sioux Center on Friday, August 30th.
