SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — UPDATE: Court documents have provided more details in the arrest of a Sioux City man for the murder of a woman over the weekend.

Edmund Pendleton, 38, of Sioux City, was arrested by Sioux City police Thursday and charged with first-degree murder.

According to court documents, a man called 911 Sunday at 12:50 a.m. saying a woman, later identified as Danielle Dolan, 46, of Sioux City, had shot herself while in a bedroom in a house on the 300 block of 19th Street. First responders arrived and found Dolan had a gunshot wound to her head, with a gun in her left hand, unresponsive. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A resident of the house told police that she, Dolan and Pendleton were in the house at the time of the shooting. The woman claimed she was on the main floor while the other two were upstairs in a shared bedroom. She then heard a gunshot followed by an “evil ‘witch’ laugh” from Pendleton, documents state.

Pendleton then came downstairs looking for the man who would later call 911, documents state. The woman said she was terrified, saying he was outside talking to someone. Pendleton then made his way back upstairs where the woman said she heard things being moved around.

The resident then went outside and waited for the other man. When he arrived, the woman told him that she heard a gunshot while Pendleton, who made his way outside, claimed he didn’t hear one. The three went inside to the bedroom Dolan was in, but found that the door was locked. Pendleton then crawled out a window, climbed into his bedroom window, and unlocked the door, finding Dolan. That is when the man then called 911.

The man told police that the gun found in Dolan’s hand was the same he had given Pendleton to protect the house.

Court documents said Pendleton was not at the residence when police first arrived.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and determined that Dolan’s cause of death was a homicide based on the bullet’s trajectory. They also determined that the gun was more than two-to-three feet away when she was shot.

Pendleton was booked into the Woodbury County Jail on a $750,000 bond.
