SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – After a big Week 1 victory at home over Glenwood, Sioux City East quarterback Cal Jepsen earned our SportsZone Player of the Week honors after helping guide the Black Raiders to its fifth Week 1 win in the last six seasons.

The junior signal-caller threw for 307 yards and a pair of touchdowns in East’s 41-14 win over the Glenwood Rams, avenging its season opener loss last year. Jepsen’s 307 yards was the third-highest mark in all of Class 5A in Week 1 as he was one of just three QB’s in the class to throw for more than 300 yards.

A big Week 1 win for Jepsen and a Sioux City East squad that looked to set the tone early.

“Last year, Week 1 didn’t go our way. But this year getting out to a good start, offense clicked first game, which is all we can ask for. Starting out 1-0 is huge for our season opener. It feels really, really good. Even though last year I had a pretty good game in Week 1, we got the loss so it didn’t mean much. But, it means a lot getting that Week 1 win.” Jepsen said.

Sioux City East will visit SB-L in Week 2 on Friday night at 7 p.m.
