SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — FEMA has approved more than $5.5 million in grants and loans to 926 applications in four South Dakota counties as of Thursday.

According to a FEMA news release Thursday, a Disaster Recovery Center will open in Turner County next week at the Viborg Community Center. As of Thursday, a FEMA spokesman provided the latest approved applications and dollar amounts in four counties:

    • Davison County 255 approved applications, $993,942 in FEMA funding
    • Lincoln County 309 approved applications, $981,579 in FEMA funding
    • Turner County 76 approved applications, $267,629 in FEMA funding
    • Union County 275 approved applications, $3,306,225 in FEMA funding

In addition, South Dakotans may also be available for assistance for damaged wells and septic systems, due to severe storms, straight-line winds and flooding from June 16 to July 8, 2024, according to a FEMA release on Wednesday.

How South Dakotans can apply for FEMA disaster funds

The assistance may be available to those in Davison, Lincoln, Turner and Union Counties.

In a news release, FEMA said “For private wells and septic systems, FEMA could reimburse people for the cost of a professional, licensed technician to prepare an estimate detailing the necessary repairs or replacement of disaster-damaged systems.”

FEMA said it “may also pay for the actual repair or replacement cost of septic system or private well.”

For those who have applied for FEMA assistance and have not had a home inspection for the well or septic system, call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 . For those who have already had an inspection and damage to a well or septic system but it wasn’t reported on the initial application, call the FEMA helpline to amend it.

How to apply for disaster assistance:
    ▪ Visit a Disaster Recovery Center in person.
    ▪ Go online to DisasterAssistance.gov for English, or DisasterAssistance.gov/es for Spanish.
    ▪ Use the FEMA mobile app in English or Spanish
