    Inmate serving time for Buena Vista County conviction dies

    NEWTON, Iowa (KCAU) — An 23-year-old inmate serving time for Buena Vista County convictions has died.

    According to a press release from the Iowa Department of Corrections, Malga Harun Yanga was pronounced dead at 6:06 a.m. on Wednesday, Sep. 4 . Yanga was 23 years old at the time of his death.

    He was being housed at the Newton Correctional Facility.

    Yanga had been serving a life special sentence from Buena Vista County. His sentence began on Aug. 17, 2020.

    Yanga was sentenced in August 2020 for third-degree sexual abuse, first-degree harassment, and for second-degree theft after violating probation.

    He was arrested after an armed robbery was reported on May 16, 2020 , on the 1300 Block of Seneca Street in Storm Lake.

    Victims told police that two men who had a rifle and demanded cash. The men reportedly then threatened to kill the victim and fled the scene. Later SLPD seized a rifle-style paintball gun from the car.
