CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa (KCAU) – The Woodbury County Conservation Board hosted a citizen scientist project this morning at Little Sioux Park. Folks of all ages helped safely tag monarch butterflies in preparation for their upcoming migration to Mexico.

With insect nets in hand, participants were able to be scientists for a day and be part of the conservation efforts for the monarchs.

“It just helps provide data for the scientists that are studying the monarchs,” said Woodbury County Conservation naturalist Kari Sandage. “As we all know, their population is declining, so by doing this we can help track their population and get a little more research on the monarchs.”

Woodbury Parks will be hosting another monarch tagging event at the Sioux City Prairie on September 12 at 6 pm.
