SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Oct. 15 remains the date for “final completion” of the new Woodbury County LEC and jail.

Shane Albrecht with Baker Group told LEC Authority members Tuesday that that’s the target for completion. Albrecht reported work on the roof and HVAC system as well as lawn seeding remain, but he was unable to provide an update on seismic bracing that the general contractor failed to install as part of the fire suppression system.

Feedback from recent public tours of the new jail has been positive, according to chief deputy Tony Wingert. Additionally, he said it’s estimated 500 people toured the building on Sept. 18.

“Comments were very positive,” Wingert said. “We had people questioning a few things, but when we explained whatever their question was, they seemed to accept that very well.”

“It was very positive, and I talked with people the rest of the weekend, people that had gone,” LEC Authority member Mark Nelson said. “I was at a meeting the next day with a club that one of its members had gone on a tour with [Woodbury County Sheriff Chad Sheehan] and was just blown away by what he had seen out there.”

Concerning the current jail facility, Nelson inquired if tours of the old building could also be given at a later date, but no action was taken. The authority next meets Oct. 15.
