The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said Nathaniel Bevers-McGivney, 21, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of the teen, who the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has identified as Michele Jackson. The charge was filed Tuesday as part of an investigation into the disappearance and death of the girl.

The CCSO says it was notified Sunday night that Jackson went missing. Bevers-McGivney was detained as a part of the investigation. The teen’s body was discovered Monday morning and Bevers-McGivney was initially charged with abuse of corpse-fail to disclose known location. He has been held in the Carroll County Jail since being first arrested.

The criminal complaint on the abuse of corpse charge says while family members searched for the girl Sunday night they came across Bevers-McGivney and he “was covered in apparent blood” and in possession of some items belonging to the victim. When law enforcement asked about the blood, Bevers-McGivney requested to speak to a lawyer.

The murder criminal complaint says Bevers-McGivney cut the victim’s throat with a knife. The complaint did not reveal any information about a possible motive in the case.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.

According to an obituary for Jackson, she was a junior at Southeast Valley High School. Private family services are being held on September 26th.
