‘We’re closer than it looks’: Tim Lester optimistic about Hawkeyes passing attack

Statistically speaking, the Iowa offense is miles ahead of where they were last season. They’re sixth in the nation in total rushing yards, and 73rd in total offense.

The passing game has left a lot to be desired. Iowa is 122nd out of 131 teams. In that regard, not much has changed from when Brian Ferentz was calling plays.

However, Tim Lester believes the numbers don’t tell the whole story.

“I think we’re closer than it looks,” Lester said. “Let’s put it that way. I’m a math major, I can look at numbers. I’d love to be a 50/50 team if everything’s cooking. But in the meantime, you’ve got to have a team that can do everything really efficiently.”

Since Week 1, Cate McNamara’s passing numbers have not jumped off the page whatsoever. His 62% completion percentage is very good, but he’s averaging just 147 yards per game. Lester says his 62-yard game against Minnesota was actually rather encouraging.

‘We had a chip on our shoulder’: Hawkeyes respond in a big way by running the football

“Everything is about your feet and timing in a passing game,” Lester said. “It was one of his best games. He got us in and out of blocking schemes, changed the mike points all the time.”

Tight end Luke Lachey only has 12 catches through four games, but Lester attributes that to coming back from rehab.

“He’s one of our most important players on our football team and one of our best leaders. His role is going to continue to grow. He’s getting more and more comfortable within the offense, and we have to continue to find ways to get him the ball.”

With many new pieces and a new system, there’s a lot to learn. The team will have a chance to prove what they’ve got in store: Eight games of Big Ten play start up next weekend in Columbus.
