Flood recovery continues in Sioux City’s Riverside neighborhood

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A long-term recovery group is continuing to help residents living in Sioux City’s Riverside neighborhood following June’s severe flooding .

Homeowners met up Thursday with representatives of the Community Action Agency of Siouxland and the Junior League of Sioux City to share flood recovery stories. Two Riverside residents who were directly impacted by high water shared their personal stories of endurance and recovery.

Deanna Mercure and Jeanne Derby are both continuing their recovery with help from local nonprofits. The progress is hard to miss.

“You just can’t imagine how much it’s meant to us and it’s just a hope, we would have to walk away if we didn’t have the help,” Derby said. “I can’t thank enough people, people showed up that I didn’t even know to help tear out my walls. And it’s just been amazing, they’re like godsent.”

“Riverside people have really been even closer,” Mercure said. “You know, we might not have talked to somebody down the street, but now we all, we’re all alike, in it together.”

Workers with the Community Action Agency of Siouxland say they continue to get everyday simple requests, including fans and dehumidifiers.
