SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Department of Corrections (DOC) has implemented a pilot program that may lead to the reintroduction of messaging and video visit options for incarcerated offenders, their family, and friends, according to a news release.

The testing began at the women’s prison in Pierre on Wednesday.

Earlier this year, messaging was removed from offender tablets because of inappropriate use. According to the DOC, visitors must be registered as an approved visitor in order to receive messages from offenders.

Messages are not instant, and no photos are allowed with the testing.
