DES MOINES, Iowa (WHO) — The union representing Iowa’s correctional officers is speaking out about an increase in violence occurring behind bars.

“Monday, last week, two correctional officers were attacked at Iowa State Penitentiary. The assailant had only been out of lockup for 72 hours but he had enough time to go to his cell, rip a leg off of a metal desk that are installed in these cells and use it as a weapon,” said Todd Copley, President of AFSCME Council 61.

Union members say both officers were injured before staff managed to get control of the inmate.

At a news conference held Thursday, AFSCME representatives said the lives of correctional officers are at risk because of staff shortages and a lack of funding. The union is calling for increased staffing, improved safety protocols, and the restoration of collective bargaining rights.

In response, the Iowa Department of Corrections released a statement saying regular meetings between the union president and Director Beth Skinner have been established focused on addressing issues and enhancing conditions in the workplace.

Skinner said, “An open-door policy is vital for effective leadership. I am always open to dialogue and eager to listen to the concerns of our staff. Their insights are invaluable as we work together to improve our department.”
