SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A long-term funding campaign by The Warming Shelter will not include any funding from the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors.

Officials with the downtown shelter were requesting an allocation of between $25,000 and $50,000 to support shelter operations. Executive director Shayla Moore addressed the board Tuesday, but the item failed to get a vote. Shelter officials have previously said they are working to secure a five-year budget.

“We wanted to set a consistent policy that, even though it is a vital function what The Warming Shelter’s doing and we applaud their efforts, it’s just not the county’s responsibility,” board member Dan Bittinger said. “It’s not their essential responsibility to fund that or pick a certain nonprofit to give taxpayer funds to.”

The board did offer other funding options where the shelter might be able to get financial help, including the Siouxland Human Investment Partnership .
