Major East Bay freeway to be shut down this weekend for repaving

PLEASANTON, CA (KCBS RADIO) – A major East Bay freeway will be shut down this weekend for a much needed repaving, made worse by recent wet winters.

All southbound traffic on Interstate 680 will come grinding to a halt starting at 9 p.m. Friday as Caltrans launches yet another weekend repaving project.

The closure is from Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon to the 580-680 connector in Pleasanton.  The roadway is expected to remain closed until 4 a.m. Monday.

Also, the express lane and left shoulder of northbound Interstate 680 will be closed during those same hours between Amador Valley Boulevard in Dublin and Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon.

This is part of a years-long project to replace deteriorating pavement with concrete.

“Concrete is a durable material so that smooth ride we’re going to have when the roadway reopens on Monday should last for decades,” Caltrans spokesperson Janis Mara told KCBS Radio.

Mara added that the recent very wet winters added urgency to the project, which started in 2022.  Caltrans opted to do a series of full and partial closures instead of a longer set of overnight closures.

More weekend closures are scheduled for next month as part of the larger project.

Stay tuned to KCBS Radio (106.9 FM and 740 AM) for current traffic conditions throughout the run of the project.

Yet another weekend of gridlock in west Dublin. I swear CalTrans hates the people who live over here.

I hope they are doing warranty work. Ever since they recently did the cement a couple of years ago this section of road is super bumpy, uneven, pot holed, & rutted out. Also... whoever the blind person is who painted the lanes did a total shit job. they are all over the place. They have been using all their time and our money on building out the TOLL lanes.. otherwise known as "fastrack". Thanks for all the damage to my car..assholes
